McCourt Global

Summary

McCourt Global is a diversified enterprise building for tomorrow across real estate and infrastructure, sports, technology, and media.

Founded by Executive Chairman Frank McCourt, a civic entrepreneur and fifth-generation builder, and led by an international executive team, McCourt Global builds on a 133-year legacy of developing infrastructure and delivering strong financial results alongside a commitment to social impact—an approach that began with the McCourt family’s original company in Boston in 1893.

McCourt Global’s dedication to innovation and civic life inspired and incubated the work of Project Liberty — a far-reaching initiative that aims to restore agency in the digital age by giving people ownership and control of their personal data.

GZERO: Can we rebuild the Internet for democracy?

At the 2026 Munich Security Conference, entrepreneur and Project Liberty founder Frank McCourt makes the case that the internet, and the AI systems rapidly reshaping it, must be redesigned to serve people, not platforms.

McCourt argues that today’s tech ecosystem is built on centralized, surveillance-driven incentives that clash with democratic values. As the world shifts from an app-based web to an “agentic” one powered by AI agents, he says we’re at a rare moment to rethink the architecture of the internet itself. What would it mean to own your digital data? Could sovereign AI agents act as fiduciaries for individuals? And can innovation and democracy coexist in the next era of technology?

This conversation is presented by GZERO Media in partnership with Microsoft. The Global Stage series convenes global leaders for critical conversations on the geopolitical forces reshaping our world.

About

Project Liberty History

In 2021, Project Liberty made the groundbreaking Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) available as a public utility to serve as the bedrock of a healthier and more inclusive web.

It also launched the Project Liberty Institute (formerly The McCourt Institute) to ensure that digital governance is prioritized in the development of the next generation of the internet. The Institute’s founding academic partners include Georgetown University, ETH Zurich, and Stanford University; and it is collaborating with MIT’s Center for Constructive Communication, Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, and Cortico to support the creation of healthier social networks.

Project Liberty’s comprehensive work stemmed from the Unfinished initiative, which MG launched in 2020 to bring together leaders and experts from across technology, academia, social impact, and the arts to imagine and create a thriving democracy and just economy. Unfinished incubated a vibrant, international network of nearly one hundred partner organizations and, in 2021 and 2022, hosted the celebrated Unfinished Live convening in New York City.
